The AmerikaHaus NRW e.V., the German Atlantic Association e.V., the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association Germany (YATA), the Bonn Academy for Researching and Teaching Practical Politics (BAPP) and the North American Studies Program of the University of Bonn, in cooperation with the US Association of Former Members of Congress, warmly invite you to a panel discussion with Rep. Joe Cunningham (Democrat, South Carolina, 2019–2021) and Rep. Tom Graves (Republican, Georgia, 2010–2020). The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Jasper Trautsch, University of Bonn.
The 2026 US midterm elections will mark a crucial crossroad for the country’s future political direction. With all seats in the House of Representatives and about one-third of the Senate up for election, the results might well change the balance of power in Congress and thereby influence the course of the remaining two years of the Trump presidency. What will the elections tell us about the state of American democracy, the country’s political divisions, and the priorities of the American electorate? For observers in Europe the stakes extend beyond domestic American politics, as the election results may also have important implications for the future of the transatlantic partnership. What will the outcome mean for US-European relations, transatlantic security, and cooperation on shared challenges over the next two years?
Drawing on their experience in Congress and their competing political perspectives, Joe Cunningham and Tom Graves will share their insights into the election results and the consequences for American politics and the transatlantic relationship, and look forward to your questions.
