Russia’s war against Ukraine is shattering the entire Euro-Atlantic security order. While the scale of the ongoing war is enormous, Russia already demonstrated its aggression and disregard for international law much earlier through the 2008 war in Georgia and the annexation of Crimea in 2014 – as the aspiration of post-Soviet states to join NATO is a thorn in the Kremlin’s sight. In response, NATO set up multinational battlegroups in the Baltic member states and Poland. Against the backdrop of the war, the deterrence these measures were intended to guarantee appears to have failed.
At this roundtable, YATA Germany and YATA International will present ideas developed during a seminar in November 2022 and will discuss the following questions:
How to reinforce credible deterrence? How to strengthen the Alliance’s ability to defend and counter military and hybrid threats as well as cyber-attacks? Are the measures adopted at the 2022 NATO Summit sufficient?
