Bewerbung:       Schildert uns in einem kurzem Essay (deutsch oder englisch; ca. 1500 Zeichen inkl. Leerzeichen), wie die internationale Gemeinschaft auf die Herausforderungen von rechts-extremen Netzwerken reagieren sollte. Bezieht dabei insbesondere die Arbeit der NATO mit ein und Erfahrungen, die z.B. bei der Bekämpfung von religiösem Extremismus gemacht wurden. Die Bewerbung sollte außerdem beinhaltet, ob ihr derzeit studiert oder wo ihr arbeitet. Bewerbungsschluss ist Samstag, 28. Juni, 12 Uhr (MESZ). Aus allen Bewerbungen wird das Vorbereitungsteam zehn Kandidierende auswählen und diese bis zum 01. Juli informieren.

Thema:
For over two decades, the transatlantic community was engaged in counterterrorism actions abroad. For example, the objectives of NATO’s ‘Defence against Terrorism Programme of Work’ (DAT POW) and the traditional approach of the organisation are more broadly focused on countering terrorist threats in the Middle East and providing solutions tailored to that threat rather than domestic terrorism.
However, while vast resources have been spent on the “war on terror” fighting jihadist extremism since 9/11, another type of extremism has not received the same attention: right-wing extremism.
Although most right-wing extremists conduct their attacks alone, they are increasingly embedded in transnational networks. These networks rely on a strong sense of common identity, based on the belief in white supremacy and the perceived need to protect it. This global “intellectual cohesion of ideas” was evident in the manifestos and social media posts released for example by the perpetrators of Christchurch, Pittsburgh, El Paso, and Halle.
The fears extremists exploit has been nurtured by far-right, nationalist parties. As such, right-wing extremism is part of a much broader problem: the rise of actors who are mainstreaming radical views and are thereby eroding the fabric of Western liberal democracies from within.
In a joint seminar of YATA Israel and YATA Germany, we will take an in-depth look at this type of terrorism, discuss the international structures, and develop strategies for a transatlantic approach to this issue and how security forces can be more effectively prepared for challenges.
