Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, Russia’s worldwide disinformation campaign has gained scale. In numerous countries, such as India, hash tags such as #IStandwithRussia experienced an upsurge. While these can be traced back to Russian bots, similar posts are recirculated by “Russia Today en Español”. What can be deemed a deliberate attempt of the Kreml to use information warfare goes hand in hand with destabilization efforts in Russia’s near abroad, including cyberattacks. Especially countries such as Georgia – even more so since the 2008 August war – are under threat. Together with two knowledgeable experts, we provide a perspective from Talinn and from Tbilisi and discuss cyber security strategies as well as ways to counter information warfare.
